25 new electric buses give SEPTA the largest zero-emission fleet on the East Coast

Philadelphia has 25 new clean and green machines.

Philadelphia has 25 new clean and green machines.

On June 4, SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) unveiled 25 new fully electric buses to run on the crosstown 29 and 79 routes in South Philadelphia. When combined with the 38 trackless trolleys already running in the city, this addition gives the transit agency the largest zero-emission fleet on the East Coast—and more battery-powered buses are expected in 2020.

“This is great news for Philadelphians who want to breathe cleaner air,” said Matt Casale, director of our national transportation campaign. “Commuting to work or getting to school shouldn’t come with a daily dose of toxic pollution that can trigger an asthma attack or worse.”

As SEPTA’s fleet continues to grow, PennPIRG is calling for a total transition to electric buses to protect our health, reduce climate pollution, and create cleaner, more livable communities.
